It's one of my favorites of us together. Later that same year, he was diagnosed with Asperger's which is on the Autism Spectrum.. We have overcome many obstacles that have came our way + will continue to break the stereotypes. "They" said he may never communicate properly, he may always growl at others. "They" said he may never understand emotions of himself or others. They said he may always scream or hide in a store because of the sensory overload. "They" said he may have a hard time in school, he may not pick up on many subjects. He may never be fully potty trained. He may never....be able to do a lot. No parent wants to hear that. Nearly 8 years later, now....With patience, love, encouragement, sweat, tears, we have made all those things happen that "they" said he may not....so far. And while it's still way too early to tell, he may or may not be able to do certain things like drive a car or live alone. Some days are great. And some days are rough and we want a do-over. We have had many melt downs, many days staying in so he can be comfortable. Many days of pushing boundaries to show him he can do it. Days that the role is switched + he teaches everyone including the adults. But every day is a day to educate + problem solve. It's not always hard, but it's not always easy either. I've had melt downs through this journey as well. Each step, no matter how small it may be to others, is a grateful step.
